JC Superstar! Jeffrey Campbell is my shoe designer of choice. JC designs new classics (like ‘Benched’, a killer revamped and deconstructed oxford shoe) and remixes old ones – my chunky, pyramid-studded JC ankle engineer boots are my go-to shoe for daily wear.
Jasmin Zorlu designs ‘sculptural headwear for earthlings’, but her looks are definitely intergalactic. Based in San Francisco, Jasmin uses traditional (fur felt) and nontraditional (upcycled cashmere and fishskin) to create stunning hats that turn heads. As she notes in her bio, her ‘futuristic headwear transcends traditional notions of time and space’. My favorite Zorlu design is her trademark fishskin aviator helmet, seen here in electric blue.
Sid Luscious and the Pants are the ‘greatest 80’s band there never was,’ perfectly encapsulated by the song Lifestyle Magazine Lifestyle’ from their album ‘Life, Style…’. All the synth and excess you could possibly want, distilled into three minutes of sugary pop confection. With a wink of the eye and some golden pipes, lead vocalist Anu (Sid) brings us back to the future.

I saw Wire a few weeks back in San Francisco, and arrived early enough to catch the Lumerians, Oakland’s answer to fuzzy, transcendental garage rock. I love their retro yet-somehow-modern style that is trippy and psychedelic, yet pleasantly droning and spacey. And who doesn’t like full-length Druid hoodies and rainbow-laced graphics?
Miranda Caroligne creates deconstructed and reconstructed fashion that I’ve long loved for its sculptural innovation. In her Offcut line, Caroligne uses bits and pieces of fabric to make unique and futuristic clothing that is somehow both high-drama and very wearable.
Bringing the excess and sexiness of the Big Band-era to the present is the hot MegaFlame Big Band and Cabaret’s mission. Jazz music combines with burlesque and torch singers to recreate a Prohibition-era San Francisco. Tonight, they’re playing at San Francisco’s Cafe Du Nord. Luck Be A Lady will feature The Bond Girl and Delilah […]
