I’ve experienced a subculture of proletariat that, from the viewpoint of the air conditioned white-collar or the intellectual locked in his office with a stack of Marxist literature, is nothing more than a stoic backbone. Sunburned roofers, dust-coated concrete finishers, swollen knuckled carpenters – drunk, high, toothless, bruised and broken – are dreamers, too. My recent opening was a semi-autobiographical look at that life.

The incessant barrage of social media imagery has almost numbed my ability to discern the holy from the profane. The work of Bill Conger has blessed me with pause from that chaos. Conger’s work has a sense of documenting something beautiful and tragic, haunting and romantic: eulogies and love stories, all at once.

Skateboarding is a beautiful form of expression and existence. It truly is a way of life. You fall, you get back up, then you fall again until you succeed. That’s the beauty of it. Russell Houghten is a prime example of skate documentation. His pieces capture the essence of that exhilarating daily experience.
