Shot over a period of 18 months, Italian photographer Gabriele Galimberti’s project Toy Stories compiles photos of children from around the world with their prized possesions—their toys. Galimberti explores the universality of being a kid amidst the diversity of the countless corners of the world; saying, ‘at their age, they are pretty all much the same; they just want to play’.

But it’s how they play that seemed to differ from country to country. Galimberti found that children in richer countries were more possessive with their toys and that it took time before they allowed him to play with them (which is what he would do pre-shoot before arranging the toys), whereas in poorer countries he found it much easier to quickly interact, even if there were just two or three toys between them.

There were similarites too, especially in the functional and protective powers the toys represented for their proud owners. Across borders, the toys were reflective of the world each child was born into—economic status and daily life affecting the types of toys children found interest in. Toy Stories doesn’t just appeal in its cheerful demeanor, but it really becomes quite the anthropological study. [via Feature Shoot]

I am thrilled to have teamed up with United Photo Industries to curate Anew, a group exhibition featuring nine photographers who unearth beauty in the seemingly irrelevant, everyday objects that most people disregard, revealing that unnoticed and banal items can sometimes be quite magical. By concentrating more on light, color, form and texture, rather than on the item itself, the photographers in the show render these items somewhat unrecognizable even though the object has not changed form: it’s simply been re-imagined and has taken on a new life.

From Klaus Pichler’s surprisingly beautiful photographs of dust collected around Vienna to Christopher Johanessen’s “investigation” of used frying pans that look similar to planets to George Benson’s anonymous record sleeves carefully arranged by color, these photographers recognize that something special lies within mundane items. They also have the talent to elevate, transform and breathe new life into these entities so that they can be appreciated and admired where previously they were ignored.

Anew opens at United Photo Industries in DUMBO, Brooklyn on December 6, 2012 (6 – 9pm) and runs through December 30, 2012.

Austrailian-based visual artist Catherine Nelson builds complex floating worlds consisting of hundreds of photographs stitched together. For years, Nelson has worked as a compositor in the movie industry creating visual effects for feature films such as Moulin Rouge and Harry Potter. When looking for couples to model for both this series, Couple Jam, and his ever popular work, Flesh Love, Tokyo-based photographer Hal goes to underground bars in Shibuya and Kabukicho (Tokyo’s Red Light District), places he describes as ‘luscious nighttime bee hives’.

Musicians, dancers, strippers, service workers and businessmen are all fair game as models as long as they are willing and able to contort their bodies to fit in the confined spaces Photographer Hal obviously has an affinity for. These photographic “events” take place in the models bathrooms. Photographer Hal explains, ‘I think of the bathroom as being one of the most private and intimate place in anyone’s home, this provoked a shyness in the models, and created a unique excitement and inspiration in the scene’. Photographer Alfonso Calero captured these abstract landscapes inspired by the painter Mark Rothko using a variety of methods he explains on Australian Photography. Based in Sydney, Calero shoots food, portraits, landscapes and travel subjects for a variety of clients. DIY Paradise, a photo art series by Matthew Albanese, was constructed from cotton, salt, cooked sugar, tin foil, feathers canvas. Of the series he says: ‘My work involves the construction of small-scale meticulously detailed models using various materials and objects to create emotive landscapes. Every aspect from the construction to the lighting of the final model is painstakingly pre-planned using methods which force the viewers perspective when photographed from a specific angle. New York-based photographer and self-proclaimed breast enthusiast, Henry Hargreaves has joined up with trade publication Resource Magazine to auction off his photos as seen in Resource’s Summer 2012 issue, Breasts that Pop. The photographs, best viewed using 3D glasses, are playful and provocative, but most importantly, are a tribute to natural breasts in all shapes and sizes. The proceeds from the silent auction will benefit the Young Survival Coalition, an organization aimed at providing support and resources for young women diagnosed with breast cancer. Amsterdam-based photographers Blommers and Niels Schumm both studied at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam and started working together in 1998. They operate in a zone between fashion, art and photography, with shifting perspectives, where images move back and forth between different meanings. In this shoot for Baron Magazine, Blommers and Schumm made normal objects appear erotic. ‘It’s nice that people think they are perverts, looking at these boring still lifes,’ they say. Henry Hargreaves has always been fascinated by Damien Hirst’s work and that boarder of what is and isn’t considered ‘Art.’

Inspired by Hirst’s worldwide retrospective of his Dot paintings at every Gagosian gallery, Hargreaves decided to recreate some of these paintings made from M&M’s. Over the last two years Klaus Pichler had been looking for accumulations of dust, fluff and grime in various locations in and around Vienna. Dust as a by product of civilisation, the enemy of a sterile society, a constant presence hidden in corners, nooks and crannies. Also, a microcosm made up of multiple components, a combination of different colours, textures and structures, a construct reproducing itself. Nathalie Daoust’s latest project, Tokyo Hotel Story, continues her exploration of female sexuality and subversion of gender stereotypes. Spending several months in the Alpha In, one of the biggest S&M “love hotels” in Japan, Daoust photographed 39 women in their private rooms, surrounded by the specialist equipment and dressed in the regalia that define their trade. All images are photographed on analogue film and hand printed ina darkroom. This allows Daoust to manipulate the negatives more faithfully to the images she felt and saw in her mind’s eye at the time of shooting. [via Feature Shoot]
