The Rest is Science is my short follow up to Brave New Old. The orignal idea with Brave New Old was to employ a mechanical storytelling element to the work, almost like a toy theatre. In the follow up, I decided to try extending this literally by placing all the characters in a giant machine that would tell the story. I also wanted to work directly with a musician from the start and cut the film to their track. So I worked with Brendan Hogan and our collaboration here has lead to a much larger project altogether.

The 80s in the UK must have been pretty scary, these public information films that detail how to survive a nuclear attack on britain, make for uncomfortable viewing. The sanitation one is pretty nasty. At the end of each film there is a chilling musical phrase, that pretty much sums up the 80s in a single noise.

John Burroughs was an American naturalist. I love the idea of understanding the animals that live around us, not just the ones that are in rainforests on the other side of the world. His book, Nature Near the Home, deals with the activities and creatures you’re likely to find in your back garden that may seem unremarkable. It’s on my reading list.

Radio drama does not get much traction in today’s world, which is a shame because it could be so good. The guys and girls at The Truth are creating movies for your ears and hopefully redefining how you think about audio content. Highly recommend.
