I grew up on classical music, then moved onto experimental rock. It stands to reason my listening tastes would fall somewhere in between. New Amsterdam Records is my go-to clearing house for all things bright and beautiful. My current favorite composer is Sarah Kirkland Snider, described as being ‘suspended somewhere between art song, indie rock, and chamber folk’.

Here’s a board game not for the faint of heart. Loosely based on the works of H.P. Lovecraft (especially The Call of Cthulhu), Arkham Horror from Fantasy Flight is one of the most elaborate games you can find. Play time is typically four to five hours. Each player chooses an investigator, and as they explore the town of Arkham, the board gradually manifests various obstacles and monsters bent on annihilating the universe.

Hailing from one of my favorite music cities, Chicago’s Castevet reminds me of what it was like to discover the youthful, orchestrated energy of Cap’n Jazz and Hot Water Music years ago. I’d call it math punk, with plenty of gorgeous hooks.

Carlos Avendaño crafts some of the best indie chamber rock I’ve ever heard (yes, I’ll take it over Arcade Fire any day.) Their debut album, Nature, is pretty much all about sex, procreation, and the human condition, and is populated by characters ranging from absurd to profound. As of this writing, they’re constantly on tour, so do yourself a favor and catch their highly addictive performance.

Being a tabletop gamer, as well as an adult with a fiancée, a band, and a couple of jobs, I tend to value my time at the gaming table. ZOMBIES!!! from Twilight Creations perfectly sates my craving for a brutally violent customizable board game about massacring the undead, that is also playable in less than 90 minutes. And, who doesn’t love army-men-style zombie figures?
