I grew up on classical music, then moved onto experimental rock. It stands to reason my listening tastes would fall somewhere in between. New Amsterdam Records is my go-to clearing house for all things bright and beautiful. My current favorite composer is Sarah Kirkland Snider, described as being ‘suspended somewhere between art song, indie rock, and chamber folk’.

Here’s a board game not for the faint of heart. Loosely based on the works of H.P. Lovecraft (especially The Call of Cthulhu), Arkham Horror from Fantasy Flight is one of the most elaborate games you can find. Play time is typically four to five hours. Each player chooses an investigator, and as they explore the town of Arkham, the board gradually manifests various obstacles and monsters bent on annihilating the universe.

‘Clothes for people, not hats for cats’. Choonimals started out drawing crazy ass critters on their friends with Sharpies. Now they’re doing the Vans Warped Tour. My favorite t-shirt is ‘Buffaluh-oh’.

Hailing from one of my favorite music cities, Chicago’s Castevet reminds me of what it was like to discover the youthful, orchestrated energy of Cap’n Jazz and Hot Water Music years ago. I’d call it math punk, with plenty of gorgeous hooks.

In the last few years, Joey Monsoon has been catapulted to the forefront of Columbus, Ohio’s emerging art scene. His pieces are centered around weathered, urban characters who seem to have a vast history encased in an epic stare or a stooped posture. His use of background textures and subtle flashes of color are also exceptionally vivid.

Carlos Avendaño crafts some of the best indie chamber rock I’ve ever heard (yes, I’ll take it over Arcade Fire any day.) Their debut album, Nature, is pretty much all about sex, procreation, and the human condition, and is populated by characters ranging from absurd to profound. As of this writing, they’re constantly on tour, so do yourself a favor and catch their highly addictive performance.

Being a tabletop gamer, as well as an adult with a fiancée, a band, and a couple of jobs, I tend to value my time at the gaming table. ZOMBIES!!! from Twilight Creations perfectly sates my craving for a brutally violent customizable board game about massacring the undead, that is also playable in less than 90 minutes. And, who doesn’t love army-men-style zombie figures?
If you’ve got it, flaunt it. Although most people agree with this cliché, Saudi Arabia do not. Mariah Carey’s catalogue of raunchy album covers have allegedly been digitally modified in the Middle Eastern country due to ‘anti-sexy’ laws. True or not, raised necklines and computer-generated pants are an interesting way to censor femininity.
Over the decades, there have been countless fictional spaceships committed to celluloid and video. A few memorable ones — the X-wing, the many Enterprises, the Nostromo, etc. — captured our imaginations and inspired generations of sci-fi set designers. Of course, for every badass starfighter, there were dozens of ugly duds. Here are my top few. Read more

This website hosts a nice collection of quirky, sometimes mind-boggling, sculptures from around the world. There’s a certain Dali-esque feel to a lot of them – those surreal, dreamy hallucinations turned into a warped reality. I’ve always been a sucker for art that really catches you out for a few seconds, and these certainly do that.
Stylistically The Asteroids Galaxy Tour is hard to pin down, except to say that they throw one hell of a party – which may be why those music-loving folks at Apple chose them to help sell what’s being touted as ‘the funnest iPod ever’. Sun-drenched pop melodies collide with Technicolor dreams, anchored by the band’s shared love of the classic soul stylings of Marvin, Stevie and Sly that can be heard in the horns snaking through Around The Bend, as well as the slinky The Sun Ain’t Shining No More [below], the Thomas Gold remix of which we have available for free download in the Music Download section of Lost At E Minor [psst, it's in the third column], along with a stack of other cool tunes. Get those iPods ‘a thumpin’!

Artist Stephanie Simek has created a sweet (literally) line of jewelry: wearable confections made from crystallized sugar, preserved in plastic, and suspended on precious metal. These one-of-a-kind gems are look good enough to eat, but much better to wear. The sugar jewels, plus other great Simek pieces, are available in the Lost At E Minor store.
