Feiyue shoes have arrived in Australia and I can’t wait to get a pair of these treads on my hoofs. They look like they could be the new Onitsuka Tigers, but with more edge and personality. The story goes that these shoes were big in China in the 1920s, before a brand revival in 2006 got them some traction in Europe. There’s something magic about being in the same space as those performing at the very height of their field. The Australian Chamber Orchestra have just kicked off their Great Romantics national tour and it was a treat to see them live in Newcastle, Australia for their first show. I’m no chamber orchestra aficionado, but I know good music when I hear it. And the tones played by lead violinist Richard Tognetti are as sweet as you could hope to hear. Can’t hurt having a 1743 Guarneri del Gesù violin under the chin. A tour worth checking out.

I moved to Newcastle late last year, though I still do a lot of work in Sydney. What a great city Newcastle is. It’s been breath of fresh air for me. For the first few months, I worked on Lost At E Minor and our online pubishing company, Conversant Media, from home. But then I heard about the Renew Newcastle project, launched by one of Australia’s creative stars (in terms of making things happen, not talking the talk), Marcus Westbury. Read more

By some estimates, Google has over half a million servers that each month crunch the equivalent of all the data in the entire library of congress 240 times over. Well over half of web users go to Google for answers to their questions, asking the machine over 400 million queries per day. Slowly but surely, Google is becoming our collective brain. Consider this: Google can now predict flu outbreaks weeks in advance simply by monitoring searches for flu terms (’sore throat’), and aggregating this based on location. They’ve launched this service as Google Flu Trends. ‘From a technological perspective, it is the beginning’, says Eric E. Schmidt, Google’s chief executive. So where is this is all heading? Read more

I’m a big fan of the resurgence of micro-breweries and boutique beers, so I was chuffed when a case of Lovells Lager was dropped off at the Australian Lost At E Minor headquarters. Let’s face it, all free beer tastes good. But Lovells is a really special drop. It has a clean, crisp flavour, and is packed with a malty punch. I dished it out to some friends who dropped in over the week and there’s a glowing consensus that this is one hell of a drink. As the love-child of ARIA award winning producer, Matt Lovell (Silverchair, Eskimo Joe, The Living End) Lovells is aligning itself closely with the Australian music scene. Which seems like a natural fit.

‘Treelines and Shadows’, Gina Bruce’s third solo exhibition, presents fresh images of the Australian landscape produced with an ancient method of painting, egg tempera. It is no surprise that Bruce knows well the places she based this work on, as the paintings exude warmth. Bruce is only 30 but has been a finalist in the prestigious Sulman Prize three years running. “Treelines and Shadows” runs from March 1-26 at the Robin Gibson Gallery in Sydney. In amongst all the walking and talking, I managed to whip out my camera every now and then. I nearly interviewed Antony for an Australian magazine. That’s right, nearly. But not quite. His publicist gave me his number and a time to call him at. So I did. Only, every time I tried it, over a period of several days, I kept getting his answering machine. Quite a robust voice he had on there too. Suprisingly gruff given the … ummm … rather demure nature of his vocals.

The philosophy of a beginning is to me, a wonderful concept. I really enjoy flicking through the back catalogues of a musician and discovering their origin, then tracing their musical journey to the present. So for American-born, Paris-based sister duo CocoRosie, who released their third album The Adventure of Ghosthouse and Stillborn to much acclaim, making the trip to their beginnings is more than worth the journey: their debut album, Le Maison de Mon Reve (released back in 2004) was a gentle stroll through their pop and classical influences, which melt together seamlessly into a backdrop for their unique and enchanting voices.
I’ve yet to find out what they put in the water in Germany that generates such a consistently rich stream of good electronica. Carrying the torch at the moment is Hendrik Weber, aka Pantha du Prince, whose early 2007 release, This Bliss, landed on my doormat with a deep bass-kick and hasn’t left my iPod since. Read more
