Hanoch Piven, multiple award-winning illustrator, will lead a hands-on collage workshop for professional illustrators who want to free their inner child. Piven’s workshop will focus on the idea of playing intuitively with objects, maximizing trial-and-error and taking advantage of serendipity, which are all very useful tools to explore any creative medium. Piven is known for using ordinary objects to create striking celebrity portraits for such clients as Time, Rolling Stone, The New Yorker, The New York Times and Random House. The workshop takes place on Tuesday, November 10, between 6:30 – 8:30pm, and will be produced by Fernanda Cohen.

I opened a solo show at the prestigious Centro Cultural Borges in Buenos Aires on Thursday. Called Water Makes Me Wet, the exhibition runs until the end of the month. I also just finished a set of window displays for high-end, Argentine fashion designer, Martin Churba, which opened last week. Martin Churba’s window displays can be seen at Tramando until September 6th, 2009. They’re co-related to the exhibition. Read more

Deanne Cheuk
Once named by influential UK style magazine, The Face, as one of the top fifty creative minds in the world, artist and designer Deanne Cheuk has a dynamic illustration style that incorporates hand-drawn patterns, shapes and colours that often disintegrate into tiny pieces to create a unique effect. Compared to the cleanliness of vector art, the hand-drawn fonts, ink splashes and objects contain a rawness and authenticity that are almost classic in feel.
New York-based Australian Deanne Cheuk has previously worked for several years as the art director of Tokion magazine, where she often incorporated illustration and colour touches in innovative and distinctive cover designs. She has also produced a book of her illustrated artwork, ‘Mushroom Girls’, so popular it’s completely sold out and currently unavailable. Similar artists worth checking out include: Fernanda Cohen, Sam Weber, Yoko Shimizu.
Fernanda Cohen
Fernanda Cohen grew up in Buenos Aires, and moved to New York City in 2000 to study illustration at the School of Visual Arts.
Cohen has illustrated the cover of The New York Times Magazine, and her work has been featured by The New Yorker, Target, Travel and Leisure, Continental Airlines, SONY, MTV, The Guardian, Telegraph, Cosmopolitan, Paper, W Hotels and Harvard Business Review, among others.
Her work has received over fifty awards worldwide, including Gold and Silver medals from the Society of Illustrators of Los Angeles, a Silver medal from the Society of Illustrators of New York, first prize by Creative Futures (U.K.) Communication Arts, HOW, Graphis, American Illustration, Lürzer’s Archive (Austria), Applied Arts (Canada), and Curvy (Australia).
Other projects include Cohen’s own line of porcelain, Reina Renée, in Argentina; her collection of post-it notes, Les Filles, in France; a children’s book for the U.S. publishing house, Scholastic; Christmas window illustration in Buenos Aires and Manhattan, and her independent line of handbags, Lilah Bags.

The Society of Illustrators of New York is hosting a lecture by Paul Budnitz — founder of Kid Robot [store pictured above] — and Mark Graham — the founder of ilovedust — on Wednesday night. Subjects to be discussed include toy design, animation and motion graphics, and how it all starts with illustration. The event will be moderated by Brooklyn-based illustrator, Fernanda Cohen.

The brilliant New York illustrator, Fernanda Cohen — who just happens to live down the road from me in Brooklyn — is teaching a portfolio class at Third Ward starting this coming Tuesday. The course, Illustration Portfolio, ‘helps students build a professional portfolio strong enough for them to feel confident to show it to art directors in the illustration field, including editorial and advertising’. She will lead the class in discussions about ‘what goes into a portfolio, and how to choose your best work, and talk about art directors, who they are, and what they expect from illustrators they are looking to hire’. There’s been an interesting trend recently in print and advertising work in particular away from the perfect symmetry and airbrushed cleanliness of vector art and back towards a looser form of hand-drawn illustration. I see it everywhere, from the middle pages of highbrow pop culture publications to the style sections of local broadsheets. And yet, it’s unexpected, especially so soon after the wave of vector art which swamped the print world just a few years back. Read more

Andrew Davis (from AWWSWEET, a curating agency) has done it again: his second skateboard art show has made it all the way from Detroit to the Brooklyn-based art space, Third Ward. Inspired by the documentary feature film Beautiful Losers, which focuses on the subcultures of skateboarding and graffiti, Good Wood brings together 45 different artists who’ve designed a stunning selection of decks. Styles range from collage, graffiti, acrylic, oil, ink, silkscreen and photography to sculpture. Some of the big players in the show include Chuck Anderson, Nathan Fox, Leo Espinosa, and myself, amongst many others.

If you’re a New York based illustrator and looking for a little intensive tuition from one of the finest in the biz, Fernanda Cohen is running an illustration course from April 5th through May 31st, every Saturday from 11 am to 2 pm: ‘The course will focus on how to solve illustration assignments, self-promotion, portfolio, contracts, licensing and networking’. The course is targeted at graphic designers and fine artists who want to break into the illustration field. Registration ends on March 31st, so you’d better get in quick!

A talent for mixed media and a good eye for detail has won London designer Andy Forshaw clients such as Dazed and Confused, Vice, and TimeOut. He’s just finished illustrating a mammoth book for Bloomsbury UK entitled What On Earth Happened which will be released worldwide this Autumn.
Maverick artist come architect, Michael Jantzen, has created this fantastic experiment as a design study for a modular prefabricated eco-friendly house. Read more
Cuffs are pretty glam right now and I’m particularly feeling those by Leethal Fashion Accessories. They also have a huge range of stylish jewellery such as bangles, rings, brooches, and earrings, all for less than $50.
I’m totally digging Andrew Schoultz’s dense line-work and limited palette. The San Francisco-based artist deals with political and social issues, but isn’t overtly a topical artist — the textures he achieves are similar to what I strive for in my own work. Read more
The New York Times recently posted a selection of Mad Magazine fold-ins from the past 40 years of the magazine’s history. The feature allows you to actually fold the images to reveal the decoded message and picture.

I live the upbeat, feel good tempo of the new single — A Hundred Hearts — from Philly group, The Swimmers. Off their latest album, People Are Soft, this song is a strangely fitting anthem for the blustery day outside.
