Finally! A board game that lets you fight fascism while having fun

A new board game turns political tensions into nonstop fun while subtly educating about the dangers of fascism.

If you take a wide panorama view of the world’s political stage right now, it seems in many ways like a deja vu from the 1920s. Nationalist movements are on the rise, the global economy is highly unstable and we have enough tech at our disposal to blow us all into oblivion.

These were all conditions that lead the world to war in the past. Add to that the apparition of the alt-right, Geert Wilders, Marine Le Pen, and a certain reality star that likes to vacation a lot and we have one heck of a cocktail.

Well, at least now we have a board game to ease all our political anxieties while the world goes to hell. Video game developer Mike Boxleiter, author Tommy Maranges, Illustrator Mackenzie Schubert and ‘Cards Against Humanity’ co-creator Max Temkin, have developed ‘Secret Hitler‘, a social deduction game for 5–10 people.

According to the official description, “The majority of players are liberals. If they can learn to trust each other, they have enough votes to control the table and win the game. But some players are fascists. They will say whatever it takes to get elected, enact their agenda, and blame others for the fallout. The liberals must work together to discover the truth before the fascists install their cold-blooded leader and win the game.”

The game was produced thanks to a highly successful Kickstarter campaign in early 2016 that managed to collect almost 1.5 million dollars. Secret Hitler is meant to be a game of political intrigue in which players are secretly divided into two teams – liberals and fascists. Fascists coordinate to sow distrust and install their leader while liberals have to stop them before it’s too late.

Seeing that their game has become somewhat premonitory, the team has sent a copy of Secret Hitler to all 100 U.S. senators, because, as they say, “We thought you and your staff might found our game relevant as you negotiate the balance of power with the Trump White House.”

If you don’t find absolutely anything funny about fascism, their game’s official website gives a pertinent address where you can complain.

‘Secret Hitler’ so far has earned excellent reviews from various news outlets, Mashable calling it a “Memo to America: Listen to the history lesson.”
