Rebellious youth of the 1970s captured in film by their high school teacher

More often than not, those famous artists you love had day jobs before they made their big break. This incredible photographer is no exception.

Before he was a globally renowned photographer Joseph Szabo was actually a high school teacher in Long Island at Malverne High School. In an attempt to grab the attention of typically disengaged high school students, the clever teacher brought his camera to class on his first day of teaching.

In an interview with Huck Magazine Szabo said that he has “always tried to capture these very personal moments, in an honest way, to show people doing exactly what they’re doing. They could just be sitting on the school steps smoking a cigarette or they could be hanging out of a car door waving their hands and saying, ‘This is the last day of school and I’ll never come back here again!’ They could be jumping in the air with excitement because of the music they’re listening to or they could be like one of my all-time favourites Priscilla – the little girl smoking at Jones Beach – who expresses something about girlhood as well as something about a certain kind of maturity and experience.”

If you want to have a little piece of this history for your very own, you can grab a hardcover book of Szabo’s photographs from his website. The collection is named Teenage as a tribute to the “poignant record of Szabo’s work spanning two decades, a timeless evocation of almost-adulthood.”
