Eminem’s ‘Stan’ is now officially a word in the Oxford English Dictionary

17 years after Eminem released his hit song Stan, the term has now been officially recognised by the Oxford English Dictionary (OED).

If you can recall, the incredibly dark rap song narrates a correspondence between Eminem and his dangerously obsessive fan, Stan. As the track progresses, Stan grows more and more upset after Slim Shady fails to respond to his letters, eventually causing him to commit suicide – and taking his pregnant wife along with him.

The term ‘stan’ has since been used over the years to refer to super fans who cross the line for their favourite artists.

Now, OED has added the word to their database. They described it as a noun which means “an overzealous or obsessive fan of a particular celebrity,” as well as a verb meaning to “be an overzealous or obsessive fan of a particular celebrity.”
