Supersense: the BEST experimental music festival is coming to Melbourne again

Presented by

In 2015, artist Sophia Brous launched a contemporary performing arts festival attended by 7,400 fans of experimental, forward-thinking music. Two years later, it’s back – and it promises to be more ecstatic than ever.

Called Supersense, the event presents a deeply curated program bringing together different “artists, traditions, experiences and contexts that speak to the ecstatic, the transformative and the rapturous.”

Just imagine: the world’s most boundary-pushing experimentalists gathered at the Arts Centre in Melbourne for three days of nothing but profound moments and heightened experiences. It’s pretty much like hallucinating, but legally, and through performance art, of course.

“Where in the past people sought out spaces of revelation in the presence of divinity, increasingly we are seeking these things out in spaces of collective artistic expression,” explained Brous.

“I wanted to create a festival that explores these interrelated states of ecstatic perspective – within a contained environment.”

This year’s program promises big things, and it starts with big names attending, like UK space-rockers Spiritualized, Russian collective Pussy Riot Theatre, the Australian Art Orchestra, The Consort of Melbourne, The Ecstatic Music of Alice Coltrane Turiyasangitananda, Master Musicians of Jajouka, Nazoronai, Ande Somby, Acid Mothers Temple & the Melting Paraiso U.F.O., and Brous’ own EXO-TECH.

Basically, there’s a little bit of everything, from Norwegian pastoral folk music, to free improvised jazz, to psychedelic rock, to doom metal, to Sufi trance.

Supersense takes place at Arts Centre Melbourne from August 18-20. Find out more by heading over to the festival’s official website.
