Tina Fey might be a comedian, but she is one of the most important voices in America right now.
The 30 Rock star has repeatedly been an empowering voice for women across the country – her wry wit cutting through the noise when a lot more serious, respected voices couldn’t.
And while she hasn’t been grabbing headlines with the Trump-bashing that’s in vogue in Hollywood right now, she’s come out of her corner swinging with a thoughtful and moving message for his supporters
During a Facebook Live fundraiser for the American Civil Liberties Union, Fey said:
“A lot of this election was turned by white, college-educated women who now would like to forget about this election and go back to watching [American cable TV channel] HGTV,”
“You can’t look away because it doesn’t affect you this minute, but it’s going to affect you eventually.”
While there were many factors that delivered Trump to an unlikely election win, educated, white women were a big part of it.
And Fey wants America’s women, regardless of political affiliation, to know that Trump’s insidious brand of misogyny WILL impact all of them.
“I personally would like to make my own pledge to college-educated white women to not look away, not pretend that things that are happening now won’t eventually affect me if we don’t put a stop to it,” she said.
While so much Trump bashing has been condescending, patronising and unhelpful, Fey’s eloquent and productive tone is exactly what America needs right now.
America also needs its country to not ignore what’s happening to its country, the stakes are too high.
