Portugal have named an airport after Cristiano Ronaldo – with a truly terrible bronze bust

If you’ve ever been to Portugal, seen a football match or glanced at a gossip magazine, there’s a good chance you’ve heard of Cristiano Ronaldo – perhaps the biggest star in the sports world.

He’s won European Championships, Champions League trophies, Spanish league cups and a variety of individual awards as best player in the universe.

So, we get it, Cristiano Ronaldo is kind of a big deal – just ask him.

His home island of Madeira, in Portugal has decided to honour their favourite sun by renaming the main airport ‘Cristiano Ronaldo Airport’ – truly a stunning honour for a player who is yet to retire.

But the bronze bust that was unveiled yesterday right in front of the reigning world footballer of the year is truly terrifying – particularly for a man who isn’t the worst looking around.

Cue the Internet exploding.

It’s not the first time Ronaldo has had some statue issues. A previously unveiled statue on the island might have got the face right, but seemed to overemphasise another aspect of Cristiano’s physique.

The previous statue led to rumours that Ronaldo had asked the sculptor to do it, while others just assumed that Ronaldo was really happy to see himself close up.
