Reckon you could handle going from 0-100 in 2.7 seconds in a self-driving, electric car? Think again!

Strap yourself in, you’re in for a ride you’ll never forget. In this age of self-driving cars, the all-electric Tesla Model S P100D is at the head of the line with a super charged driving experience unlike anything else you’ve experienced.

Tesla recently announced that every new Model S and X will come with advanced self-driving hardware. This means that they’ll have the capability to drive autonomously and more safely than human drivers can. Which is probably a very good thing when you’re accelerating from 0-100 in 3 seconds or even under (the P100D with Ludicrous).

The car features “eight surround cameras [which] provide 360-degree visibility around the car at up to 250 meters of range. Twelve updated ultrasonic sensors complement this vision, allowing for detection of both hard and soft objects at nearly twice the distance of the prior system. A forward-facing radar with enhanced processing provides additional data about the world on a redundant wavelength, capable of seeing through heavy rain, fog, dust and even the car ahead.”

Impressive.

The brains behind the car, Elon Musk, said recently: “For the first time, the fastest accelerating production car in the world is an electric car. I think this sends a great message to the public about the future of transportation.”

The all-electric Model S and Model X will also be fitted with an onboard computer that is 40 times more powerful than the ones used in current Tesla models. That’s right: forty times. Thank you, technology.

Together, the software and hardware combine to give an autopilot that “provides a view of the world that a driver alone cannot access, seeing in every direction simultaneously and on wavelengths that go far beyond the human senses.”

But while this is all very exciting, it’s the Ludicrous Mode optional extra that really thrills.

I recently had the pleasure of test driving the Model S P90D on a road-trip one hour north of Sydney and what an experience it was. If you do just ONE intense adrenaline rush in your lifetime, make it shooting from 0-100 in 3 seconds. Phew. You’ll never feel the same again.

Here’s the proof…

The surge through your body forces you straight back into the seats as you push the pedal down. It really is an outrageous sensation. After all, it is the ‘quickest production car in the world’.

The other notable feature is that the ride is whisper quiet (and emission free). You barely even realise you’re in it, let alone driving it. In fact, the only noise we could hear was the sound of loud music blasting through the fancy front dashboard speaker.

If you have to drive somewhere far, and in hurry, this car is the way to do it. It is without a doubt the future of driving.

The P100D with Ludicrous, which accelerates from 0-100 kph in 2.7 seconds, is due in Australia soon. Find out more about Tesla’s Model S series here.
