This crazy racist safety poster was distributed by the Red Cross… two years ago! They just apologised for it this week

What’s wrong with this picture? Actually, let me rephrase that, what’s Not Cool about this picture? If you answered “All the blatant racism”, you’d be spot on!

This pool safety poster from the American Red Cross has five “Not Cool” scenarios visible, all of which are being performed by black, brown and Asian people.

As for the two “Cool” actions? You guessed it, a couple of white people are behaving themselves.

It’s a sad relic from a far less tolerant time… 2014!

The swim-safe poster appeared to fly under the radar for two years, until Margaret Sawyer of Colorado noticed it.

“I saw this one, and I just kept thinking, ‘It looks like they’re trying to do something here that shows all kids together of all different backgrounds, but they’re clearly not hitting the mark,’” she said.

Thankfully, after raising the issue with the Red Cross, the humanitarian organisation apologised and are now trying to get them out of circulation, saying in an official statement, “we have removed the poster from our website and Swim App and have discontinued production. We have notified all of our partner aquatic facilities requesting they take down the poster.”
