We might not have built this city on rock and roll, but you wouldn’t be blamed for thinking Melbourne is built with music in mind.
Long before David Bowie’s sad passing (RIP you legend!), fans were thrilled to hear that Prahran’s Tatu building, which completed construction a few years ago, was originally destined to have a humongous façade of the iconic Aladdin Sane.
A strange twist of building regulations, council approvals and community involvement resulted in a face that is definitely not Bowie’s, but still features the unmistakable lightning bolt.
This hasn’t stopped local residents referring to the musician-inspired apartments as ‘That Bowie building’ or making jokes about parking their bike or sleeping in the Thin White Duke.
Today you can witness what could have been – it’s still a great interpretation of the man’s legacy in this music-loving city.
The 18-unit Tatu building is located at 27 Macquarie Street, Prahran, for those who live in Melbourne and have a thirst for Bowie.
