Barbie’s ‘average’ looking friend is finally getting her period! (NSFW)

The world first greeted the Lammily doll in 2014, when creator Nickolay Lamm decided he wanted to produce a fashion doll with more typical body proportions than, say, a Barbie doll. With the tagline ‘Average is Beautiful’, Lamm was able to turn a humble crowd funding project into a successful company that’s still going strong today. And this week the Lammily doll made waves when it was announced that a $10 Period Party extension kit would be available to girls.

The Period Party kit contains an educational pamphlet about menstruation, a pair of panties, 18 reusable (and coloured) pads and liners, plus a period calendar to keep track of your Lammily doll’s monthly flow.

The idea is to start an open and positive conversation about periods. But uh, with facts on the package that state an average woman ‘spends a total of 6 years on her menstrual period’ – I’m not sure this is going to warm the hearts of young girls just yet. And who came up with Period Party? Sure, celebrate your body developing, but party? Really? I’ll be celebrating when this is all over.
