What can you buy for a dollar in different countries around the world?

You can’t get much for a buck these days – perhaps a stick of gum (if you’re lucky) or a couple of stamps. Well, that is if you’re living in New York. But what about other parts of the world? A dollar might not get you too far in NYC but in other countries, it can buy you a bottle of wine, an espresso and even a foot massage.

Lonely Planet asked its readers what a single dollar could buy in their neighbourhoods and the answers were quite surprising. The places where your dollar with go the farthest is Egypt, India and the Philippines. Though if you’re obsessed with good watermelon, then a buck for an entire watermelon in Costa Rica seems like a dream come true. And the places where $1 isn’t worth much at all? Australia. It’ll only get you a lottery ticket.
