Newly-born baby chameleon still thinks he’s inside his egg

If you love hitting your alarm’s snooze button, then this here’s your spirit animal. At the Canvas Chameleon pet shop in Reading, Pennsylvania, a baby panther chameleon (Furcifer pradalis) seems to think he’s still inside his egg even after hatching.

The adorable sight was caused by this little guy’s failure to ‘pip’, that thing where birds and reptiles break out of their shells. If animals fail to pip properly, they might die from lack of nutrients – which this baby chameleon almost succumbed to. Fortunately, his human caretaker Nick Henn was there to help.

‘When his siblings were running around the container and he was still hanging out in the egg, I knew it was time to help’, Henn explained. ‘This isn’t to say that he wouldn’t have found a way out, but based off my past experiences with situations just like this, I felt it was necessary to play Mother Nature and give him a helping hand’.

After coming out of his shell, the chameleon soon uncurled itself and is now in good health.
