Japan has created a robot bear to help nurses take care of their patients

This is ‘Robear’, a nurse robot designed to make significant improvements in nursing care, all the while making apathetic machines look like huggable teddy bears.

Robear can help patients stand up, as well as lift them out of their beds and into wheelchairs. They robot nurses are also equipped with extendable legs to give them more balance and stability while lifting heavy patients.

Developed by the brains at RIKEN and Sumitomo Riko Company, the robot is intended to assist Japanese nurses in taking care of the country’s ever-increasing elderly population.

‘We really hope that this robot will lead to advances in nursing care, relieving the burden on caregivers today’, said Toshiharu Mukai, leader of the project’s robot sensor systems research team.

‘We intend to continue with research toward more practical robots capable of providing powerful yet gentle care to elderly people’.

It may not be Baymax from the Disney film Big Hero 6, but Robear is just as adorable.
