These elderly Chinese women wake up at 4am daily to feed 1,300 dogs

Thanks to five elderly women from Weinan, Shaanxi Province of China, over 1,300 stray dogs have been saved from the pound, fed and taken care of for the last six years. With so many dogs depending on them, these plucky women, who are in their 60s and 70s, wake up at 4am to prepare 400 kilograms of dog food every single day.

The dog shelter was established in 2009 by 60-year-old Wang Yanfang, who was moved to act when she witnessed many strays taken away by the local authorities. Thus far her volunteering work has been solely supported by donations.

Despite their good intentions, each of the ladies has been bitten several times. Talk about biting the hand that feeds!
