AVANI Bentota Resort and Spa on the south-west coast of Sri Lanka is luxury and relaxation done right. Located in Bentota itself, famed for its coastline and sunsets over the Indian Ocean, AVANI is perfectly situated right on the warm, gentle waves.
We stayed at AVANI Bentota during a January trip to Sri Lanka for a beautiful wedding. We chose Bentota as it was close to Colombo and the international airport – AVANI’s resort is within a two hour drive, where you’ll be greeted on arrival by the efficient staff, as well as the General Manager, and a refreshing drink in the recently renovated establishment.
Famous Sri Lankan designer architect, Geoffrey Bawa, originally designed the resort, and it has been recently restored to its former glory. The beauty of the buildings is complemented by details such as the tranquil koi pond, as well as the floating flower arrangements throughout the hals.
The interiors are modern and comfortable, with the hotel boasting comforts such as a pillow menu for the perfect night’s rest, balconies overlooking the pools, gardens and beach in the near-distance. It’s a relaxing place – guests are here for the natural serenity of the soft waves, warm sand and hot sun. The stretch of beach is one of the best on the island.
Other small touches include free high-speed WiFi, not always found in Sri Lanka.
A feature of the hotel is the food. While buffets are not uncommon, the high-quality and attention to detail at both restaurants, as well as the rooftop Loft bar make for an enjoyable meal at breakfast or dinner. The a-la carte restaurant, Frangipani, offers a good range of authentic Sri Lankan and Thai meals for when you’re looking for more than the buffet.
A standout was a dining by the beach experience, set just after dusk, and surrounded by flaming torches, a pleasurable four course dinner mixing Sri Lankan traditional food with Western styles was coupled with cocktails and a long wine list. It was a perfect special meal and experience.
We spent an afternoon mixing between the beach and the pool before trying out the Spa. Offering traditional Sri Lankan Ayuvedic massages and treatments with a range of other rejuvenating treatments for travellers at very reasonable rate, our only regrets were that we didn’t have time for more.
The resort is located close to Bentota tourism attractions, where you can experience anything from a riverboat ride to parasailing or visiting a local turtle sanctuary.
Our stay was a wonderful way to experience an island resort stay in luxury, and it’s accommodating for those on a budget to those looking for the best in luxury in Sri Lanka in the top-end suites. Room choice can be tailored to your needs – a room on a higher floor features a lovely view of the beach or garden and is very private, while a room on the ground-floor gives you the best access to the pool, beach, and bar.
Rooms prices vary with the season but we spotted some handy deal from as low as AU$177.
