Swedish furniture chain giant IKEA has been recently experimenting with putting life-sized cardboard cutouts of actual homeless cats and dogs on its showroom pieces — such as couches and rugs — in Singapore, to get customers thinking about bringing a potential pet home. The cutouts come with unique barcodes that can be scanned with a mobile device to get instant information about the actual animal pictured.

It all started with IKEA stores in Singapore partnering a coalition of pet adoption agencies for the adoption drive; subsequently, the Tempe stores teamed up with the Arizona Humane Society for a similar initiative. We can’t help but think how even more great it would be to have the actual animals instore. Still, what a stroke of genius.
