Since 1988 this planet has been graced by an annual event that sits somewhere between beautiful and bizarre, it’s the World Bodypainting Festival. From 47 countries all over the world, people flock to the beautiful lakeside town of Pörtschach in Austria to compete, spectate and appreciate the kaleidoscopic array of incredibly intricate patterns and designs painted across hundreds of bodies.

The effect was even brighter than usual this year with the theme of ‘Pop Art’. There are five main categories for the World Championships which are brush/sponge, airbrush, facepainting, special effects body painting and the mind-boggling UV bodypainting which takes place at night for optimum effect. Besides these main competitions there is a plethora of amateur categories, events and shows that run non-stop during the festival.

This year the World Bodypainting Festival ran from the 29th June to the 6th of July and was sponsored by Canon. It’s a shame that we’re too late to catch it, but there’s always 2015!
