So prison isn’t your number one choice for a family photo, but sometimes you’ve gotta roll with the punches, grit those teeth and bare it. In Alyse Emdur’s book Prison Landscapes, she presents a collection of photos of prison visiting rooms.

‘Glittering cityscapes, scenes of natural landscapes, historical or fantasy architecture and more are often painted by inmates and used as portrait studios,’ and as you can see here, those artistic inmates have a lot of talent. Emdur was initially denied access to photographing prison visiting rooms, so she was able to capture a few pictures by seeking out prisoners using penpal sites — now that’s one determined lady!
