A reason to join the military? Pizza that lasts for years

MREs (meals read to eat) in the military can be bland at the best of times, but researchers at a U.S. military lab in Massachusetts are ‘closing in on a recipe that doesn’t require refrigeration or freezing’ for pizza. A food scientist at the U.S. Army Natick Soldier Research, Development and Engineering Center says, ‘You can basically take the pizza, leave it on the counter, packaged, for three years and it’d still be edible’. Three years!

No word yet if soldiers will actually enjoy the taste of this ‘pizza,’ but the taste test lab operator Jill Bates describes it as ‘pan pizza, with a crust that’s a little moist and not super-crispy’. Not sure this will persuade pizza lovers to join the army or look elsewhere for work!
