J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle Earth has long been the fancy of geeks with its diverse and magical world filled with Elves, dragons, dwarves, Hobbits, and an evil oversized eye that’s on fire. Soon, we could be exploring the fantasy realm ourselves with the help of Danish programmers, who are attempting to create a digital world that matches it on a 1:1 scale – minus the bloodshed and temptation to be evil, of course.
The Middle Earth Digital Elevation Model Project lets you see every nick and cranny of Middle Earth, from the amazing view from outer space, to Bilbo’s house, to the death-filled mines of Moria. The programmers are using Outerra, a world building software, to place every mountain, forest, and river on the map. If you think it’s tiring to trek Middle Earth, just imagine trying to build it!
Everything is still a work in progress, but you can already download the demo and see for yourself the amazing work these dedicated programmers have done. Hopefully very soon, we could all go on an unexpected journey through the digital world of Middle Earth.
