No wonder those Encyclopedia Britannica sets were so heavy, they have mountain ranges inside of them – literally Adieu is a 24-volume set of Encyclopedia Britannica turned into a mountain landscape by artist Guy Laramee. The series is a sort of tribute to the 244-year old institution after it announced that it would cease printing its multi-volume book sets.

The mountain carved on the encyclopedias were inspired by the various grasslands and dessert landscapes Laramee saw in his travels to Brazil, Ecuador, and Peru. So nature has taken full circle here. From what was once a tree, was turned into an encyclopedia, and now it’s a mountain. The circle of life is complete!
