Cats are wonderful creatures, we all know that. They’re plush, soft, furry, ‘purry’, and will bring you dead animals as gifts. They make good candidates to replace dogs as ‘man’s best friend’. For this grandma from Japan, one cat may just have.

Photographer Miyoko Ihara has been documenting for 13 years now the life of her inspirational grandmother, Misao. She started taking Misao’s photographs to celebrate the life of a woman she very much looks up to and aspires to be.
Misao took in a stray cat eight years ago and named him Fukumaru.

The cat, beautiful with snowy white fur and different coloured eyes, instantly became close with Misao. They have been inseparable ever since. According to Ihara: ‘Partly because they are both hard of hearing, my grandmother and Fukumaru are always looking into each other’s eyes. They’re really close’.
