New Zealand penguins in trendy eco sweater vests
On the 5th of October 2011, a cargo ship ran aground in New Zealand pouring 350 tons of oil into the ocean. While the Environment Minister Nick Smith described the oil spill as the nation’s ‘most significant maritime environmental disasters’, volunteers took to the shores to save the local wildlife.
In the noble effort, Skeinz, a yarn store in Napier, posted patterns for knitted ‘penguin jumpers’ which, while looking delightfully adorable, help prevent the birds from preening and thus stopping them from ingesting the toxic oil. For those of who know how to knit, here’s how to make the perfect penguin sweater.
