I had the recent pleasure of staying at the beautiful Standard Hotel in downtown Manhattan and be immersed at the same time in the ever-changing cultural and culinary scene that envelopes the East Village of New York.

The building is 21 stories high, with 145 rooms, most of which have floor to ceiling windows and sweeping views over the bustling streets that surround it. The decor inside is fittingly designer-y, with modern furnishings and a contemporary colour palette.

As with so many things in New York, space is at a premium, but they’ve managed the relatively small available space superbly at The Standard with full bathrooms and sufficient living space surrounding a mattress that was well received after a full day of walking through neighboring Soho and beyond. It’s not cheap, but then again, it shouldn’t be.

This is for discerning travellers with an eye for detail and the style to appreciate the many subtle design touches throughout.
