If you haven’t been to New Zealand for the Hobbits, the beautiful scenery, or the sheep. You might just go there for the Glow Worms. Luminescent glow worms abound in the Waitomo Glow Worm Caves in New Zealand. These creatures will mesmerize you with the strange glow that emanates from their bodies.

It’s kind of like looking up at the stars up close, except that these stars are organic, larva-like creatures that are similar to bioluminescent microorganisms. Really romantic stuff here.

These creatures are endemic to New Zealand and choose to reside in the caves as they approach their larval stage. It is also said that they are brightest when they are at their hungriest. Cue sound effects: Dun dun dun dun! Kidding. Glow worms are more afraid of humans than we are afraid of them, you big wimp.
