At the heart of Kaori Mitsushima’s illustrations is the conviction that cats are people. Fashionably dressed and elegantly posed, they look straight ahead with expressions that are impossible to read. I see traces of ennui and indifference, yet also keen alertness. Her cat people are complicated and elude interpretation. They are also beautiful, boldly silhouetted and intricately filled with patterns and colors. I could look at them all day.
