Dogs yawn most when owners do too

It’s fairly well known that yawns are contagious among humans. But did you know that they are across species too? According to a study published in the Japanese journal Plos One, dogs are susceptible to contagious yawns from humans and are more likely to start yawning if they see their owner do it too.

As evolutionary biologist Teresa Romero explains, ‘Our results make it likely that there’s an empathic basis to contagious yawning, that it’s modulated by emotional attachment with the owner’.
