If Barbie had the measurements of a real woman

By now, we all know that Barbie’s figure is impossible to achieve in real life, so Pennsylvania-based artist Nikolay Lamm decided to show us what Barbie would look like if she had the measurements of a real woman. Lamm made a 3D model using the measurements of an average 19-year-old, and photographed it next to an actual Barbie Doll. Interestingly, Lamm’s doll looks more natural than Barbie herself. Which begs the question: why can’t Mattel manufacture one?

UPDATE: Here’s a teaser from our exclusive interview with the artist/Barbie activist himself, Nickolay Lamm. Check it out!

Why did you decide to create a realistic Barbie doll?

I wanted to show that average is beautiful.

How long did it take you to pull off the concept, and what was the hardest part in the process?

It took me 3 months to create. The hardest part was making the 3D printed model.

Seeing as how this project got significant media coverage, do you think the public’s perception of a woman’s ‘perfect figure’ has changed?

I hope so! I can’t gauge exactly how perception is changed. But what’s more important is not how the general public feel about the woman’s perfect figure but what women feel about it.
