Pumping iron in the great outdoors, Soviet-era style

When photographer Kirill Golovchenko found his way three years ago to Kachalka, a Soviet-era outdoor gym in Kiev, Ukraine, he was so fascinated that he shot enough for an entire book. The fitness facility is developed under Polish gymnast Kasimir Jagelsky and mathematics professor Yuri Kuk in the 1970s, and is free to use for anyone who’s up for building muscle mass with old tires and crude-looking machines welded from rusty scraps and parts. We know we really wouldn’t want to pick a fight there.
