Now you can control a real cockroach with your smartphone

Not sure what exactly to make of this invention by DIY company Backyard Brains yet, but it sure is fascinating. Basically, these guys have built a mini-backpack for cockroaches which, when donned after an anesthetized surgical procedure that involves placing wires inside their antenna, allows you to control their movements from your smartphone.

The thinking behind this is that roaches use antennas to navigate their world, so, microstimulation caused by smartphone commands make the roaches think there is a wall, which in turn makes them turn. We like our insect friends just fine, so we don’t quite want to mess with their brains, but we are looking forward to the day when we can fix this on people who annoy us and steer them far, far away.
