Ah, it’s one of these mysteries in life you have to wonder: do beards give you any protection against harmful UV rays? The answer is: yes, apparently. A bunch of researchers from the University of Southern Queensland in Toowoomba, Australia, actually embarked on a study and wrote a paper dubbed ‘Dosimetric investigation of the solar erythemal UV radiation protection provided by beards and moustaches’.

Their conclusion? Facial hair reduced UV radiation exposure pretty significantly, with bearded faces receiving approximately two-thirds less exposure compared to clean-shaven faces. A solid beard supposedly provided protection from UV rays equivalent to SPF of between two and 21. Consider us wowed.
