Naples’ Metro Station given a dramatic visual make-over
There’s an exciting project happening in Naples’ underground metro stations involving artists, designers and architects such as Alessandro Mendini, Anish Kapoor, Gae Aulenti Jannis Kounellis, Karim Rashid, Michelangelo Pistoletto and Sol LeWitt. Called the Art Stations Project, the initiative involves filling stations with amazing art and then opening them up for public viewing. One of our favourites is the Toledo Metro Station (pictured) which opened in September 2012 and was designed by Oscar Tusquets Blanca. You could say I’m a little jealous. The only art I come across in Sydney’s underground stations is graffiti.

One of the worst, depressing railway stations in Sydney is the one, deep underground, near Macquarie Shopping Centre. It is brutalist and totally devoid of any humanity, signs of life, soul or beauty. It is a shocking monument to monied engineering. Surely a rich country like Australia could just do so much better. This is human abuse, having horrors like this. I’m astounded people put up with that when you see the wonders of the design abouve

The art permanently on display in the Stockholm Metro – what some sometimes call “the world’s longest art exhibition”, is quite interesting and very different depending on station.
