Confronting photos series: China 2050
We all have a vision of what we think the future will look like. So what does the ever present growth of China mean for Westerners? That is the question China-based French photographer Benoit Cezard is trying to answer through his interesting and controversial series, China 2050. The series show Westerners performing a range of “blue collar” jobs that may currently be performed by poorer Chinese migrants – cleaners, construction workers and waiters are all included. Is this the future for the Western world?

Why is it “confrontational” to see a ‘westerner’ cleaning for, or waiting on, a non-westerner? Are white’s too above this? The “Is this the future?” caption is like some ridiculous scare headline you’d expect in a tabloid newspaper. Of course it’s great to toy with stereotypes in art, but to introduce this series in this way is pretty distasteful.

Hi Steve, I believe that the series is “confrontational” because it’s trying to make a social statement on the non-advancement of western countries; obviously there are many “westerner” cleaners, construction workers etc. at the moment.
When I use the words “Is this the future?” I ask it as a westerner. Why aren’t we trying to advance and evolve?

Sounds more like a fetish, should capitalise on this..
