40,000 people, one giant tomato fight
An agreeable mass food fight in public. This is the Spanish fest La Tomatina, which takes place in the small town of Buñol, Valencia on the last Wednesday of August every year. Last year, tens of thousands of tomato revellers turned up to fling 120 tons of overripe tomatoes at each other. Just so you might want to turn up for this year’s, we found a particularly persuasive photo gallery from The Huffington Post that might get you all psyched up for this veggie-friendly blood bath.

I went last year with some mates on a bus tour. I was a bit nervous as I thought they might not get us there in time, but they were great and got us as close to the actual fight as possible (about a ten minute walk down hill to the heart of the action) we were right in the middle and got completely covered- loved it! After, the trip included a shower, swim and lunch in a country park close by – the shower was a welcome relief and the lunch was a traditional Paella with loads of booze. the tour was a great way to do La Tomatina, it was a great crowd we were with from all over the world. thisisvalencia.com organised the tour.
