The city of Wellington is emerging as a genuine global city full of culture, design and lashings of cool. And a shining light in this city is the boutique hotel, Ohtel Wellington. Ohtel distills all that’s right with Wellington into a unique and compelling luxury experience.
Design drips from every surface of the hotel, with an eclectic mixture of contemporary New Zealand design interspersed with mid-century furniture. The experience is a visual treat. The relaxed and friendly staff know how to run a boutique hotel and have none of the airs common at other luxury hotels. This is a real gem of a hotel in all senses.
The 10 suite hotel couldn’t be more perfectly located, situated on the harbour at Oriental Parade and across the road from Te Papa museum (the iconic Museum of New Zealand). The best bars, cafes and restaurants are right on Ohtel’s doorstep.
My room had a commanding view over Wellington habour, with a small balcony from which to watch the comings and goings on what has been labelled the finest habour in the world. The amenities are eco-focused and solidly Kiwi in origin. There was barely a thing out of place or not considered in this spacious room. My desk was a beautiful wood number, no doubt keenly spotted by the owner who has an eye for quality and eclectic furniture.
Ohtel is a great hotel that is doing its small part in lifting Wellington into a beacon of design and boutique appeal.
