Gritty photos of the New York Subway in 1973
Having ridden the New York subway system for five years, it seems the only real perils these days are rats, panhandlers, and being taken out by an errant cross kick from an energetic breakdancer. These photos from the How To Be A Retronaut blog are a wonderful reminder of a more colourful and edgy New York that is (perhaps sadly?) long since passed.

I do not look back at these New York City days fondly. What a mess, glad to leave.

This images are great reminders to keep tough on crime, not nostalgic for it.

Takes me back to when I was 14, smoking ciggies on red-rattlers on the way home from school. These images and the rise of graffiti in the 70′s are a reactionary measure by regular people in the biggest city in the world. I love these pictures. Some of these tags are so early; it’s the birth of a revolution. This is a friggin’ history lesson, people! “Keep tough on crime”… pfft
