Gesture recognition with contact microphones

Mogees is a contact microphone that can be attached to any object to turn it into a musical instrument. The microphone recognizes different hand gestures and translate them to different sounds. You can program what sound each gesture produces, as well as new gestures to create even more complex music.

Real Estate: It’s Real (Live at Insound Studio Sessions)

On their second album, Days, New Jersey band Real Estate show that they can take a good thing and make it better. This album has a carefree feel to it, seemingly effortless for them to create. Their songs transmit a nostalgia for a relaxed way of living, summers past, and youthful tomfoolery. Singer Martin Courtney makes some valid points when he said: ‘Our careless lifestyle, it was not so unwise’.

Epic wheat pastes by street artist Get Up

Get Up’s wheat pastes are a sight for sore eyes on otherwise monotonous areas of Philadelphia. A native of the the City of Brotherly Love, he spends his time between there and San Francisco. To take down a Get Up wheat paste is akin to stating that you don’t love your city.

FlickrFightr

FlickrFightr is great because it is so simple. Pick the picture you like better. It replaces it with another picture, and you pick the one you like better. Simple. As you quickly click on the pictures you like, it narrows down the subject matter and style into what you are interested in, forcing you to slow down and admire some amazing photography Flickr has to offer.

Last week when the 2008 ARIA nominations were released, I was so happy to see the recognition of Melbourne’s Eddy Current Suppression Ring. Their album Primary Colours is pure, unadulterated Aussie rock, standing out from the numerous electro releases we’ve had this year. The band manages to capture that wonderful pub-vibe without any pretension or tragic nostalgia. Primary Colours speaks to people who still seek an existence that is all about wearing ripped jeans, loitering and punching people in the face … not in a violent way, but because your fist flailed in that direction while you were thrashing around front of stage.

While I feel I am not alone in breathing a sigh of relief over this season’s purging of fluoro, in retrospect there was a lot to be learned from the experience: don’t wear all fluoro, or don’t wear fluoro at all. And we slowly trudged back to black, which, despite what other colors may think, will always be the new black. Read more

Now this is fun. This 3D watch dial actually jumps to life. The dial is a modern version of the 19th century art form of lithophanes: carved porcelain sheets that, when lit, deliver astoundingly detailed images. When the pusher is activated, the dial springs to life in 3D, with an LED light and afterglow effect. Read more
