Conversations With Trees
The use of the tree in the realm of the fine arts seems infinite. An inspired Shih Yun Yeo recently conceived of a truly unique study. The artist engaged in ‘collaboration’ with various trees in Singapore, collecting a number of drawings for a solo exhibition in 2011. The work relates heavily to her attempt to ‘release drawing from its enslavement to the artist’s hand’. Poetic and romantic, the expression cedes control to the natural environment as a creative source. Green envy.

Mike Rogers draws America’s nuclear power plants
75 colored pencil drawings by Mike Rogers recently exhibited at the impressive Parker’s Box Gallery in Williamsburg. The work documented all of the nuclear power plants in various locations throughout the United States. An ambitious obsession with primary color coded repetition, depicting complex landscapes in simplistic Christmas Card fashion. The individual pieces are small, delicate, romantic, yet the overwhelming numbers stagger. The controversial subject, handled in a manner few have attempted, provided quite a challenge.

A couple of years back at Cannes Lion, a German agency has won the Grand Prix in Design for this tree drawing idea. Guess Mr. Yeo is a couple of years late.

Says New York-based illustrator Yuko Shimizu on the work of artist Marilyn Minter: ‘I was extremely lucky to be able to study fine arts with Marilyn Minter as my professor before she became too busy and stopped teaching the course. She was brutally honest about students work, which sometimes made me cry but made me grow like nobody else did. I owe her a lot’. Read more

No wave is alive and well, if Brooklyn duo Talk Normal are any indication. Drummer Andrya Ambro keeps things cohesive with surprisingly precise percussion, occasionally banging on such things as an electric guitar and an old iron pipe rigged with contact mics, while guitarist Sarah Register coaxes some unnerving and discordant noises from her axe and array of pedals. The two take turns shouting abstract and absurdist lyrics with voices like hi-tech valkyries from a futurist nightmare.
Produced by Shadow Play, an independent label based in New York City, each piece is digitally custom-printed with actual images from NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope. Yes, we agree, this is a great buy for all you astro-lovers out there. Read more

Perhaps a creative coincidence, but Tim Knowles has been doing this for a few years:

Beautiful work, nonetheless.
