Sam Winston’s spreads for the New York Times magazine

I absolutely love the spreads that typographer Sam Winston created for New York Times magazine. He contrasts very griddy layouts with organic ones and uses red type to highlight important information. His experimental, deconstructive use of type is remarkable, and his layouts feel fluid and alive. His work is refreshing and inspiring.

Recent poster designs by Christy Hill

Some recent designs of mine include a back-lit transit poster for the 8th Annual Summer Dreams Literary Arts Festival in Vancouver, which has a look and feel similar to that of a well-designed book; a poster for Pandora’s Collective, featuring a colourful modern-retro aesthetic; and a poster for The Association of Canadian Industrial Designers (ACID), with a repeating layered maple leaf symbolizing growth of the organization. Intelligence in Lifestyle Magazine spreads

Back in the day, Edward Tufte was one of the few inspiring information designers, but these days there is an endless array of talent. Intelligence in Lifestyle Magazine out of Italy has some really amazing spreads that are certainly worth taking a look at. They are art directed by Francesco Franchi and are quite stunning in their complexity and simplicity. Read more

Mexican painter Patricio Betteo

When I stumbled upon prolific Mexican painter Patricio Betteo’s work, I was intrigued by his dense and moody dreamscapes. They have a post-apocalyptic feel with saturated colours, deeply layered shadows and humans wearing bodysuits and facemasks. They are quite unique in technique, the way they use semi-liquid shapes, movement and how the compositions pack the frame.

All the Brandon Boyd aficionados out there can now get their hands on some newly released Giclée prints. The limited to a hundred special edition high-resolution digital scans feature the intricately lined Vitamin Sea sketch from Boyd’s renowned Ectoplasm exhibit. I’m really digging the centred wave pouncing into the foreground. Nice!

It’s pretty bold to release a 25 track double CD as your first album, but singer-songwriter Benji Hughes doesn’t care. Themes of love and heartbreak run though the album and his folk-tinged pop draws comparisons to Beck, The Eels and The Magnetic Fields. [portrait by Vanessa Prager]

With the recent financial qualms, a moment of reflection takes over as we begin to wonder how we all became so out of touch with reality. Somehow Luxury lost its way and mistook itself for decadence, joining the Bling-Bling parade and gravitating towards the streets of self-indulgence. Yet, the true essence of Luxury, as the divine Coco Chanel states ‘is not in the richness and ornateness, but in the absence of vulgarity’. Bravo, I say! Read more
