Cecilia Paredes blends herself into wallpaper backgrounds

Using body paints, costumes, make-up and endless patience, Peruvian-born artist Cecilia Paredes camouflages herself into the backgrounds of her photographic performance pieces. In her desire to blend with, and become one with, the landscape around her, she is recalling themes of relocation, displacement and migration.

Amazing timelapse video of the Night Sky

To the naked eye, the night sky seems to be a fixed, unchanging darkness. But astounding beauty is hidden just beyond the limits of our (unaided) human perception. As the Earth rotates, time-lapse photography captures what our eyes can’t perceive, and it is breathtaking. This video was photographed in 2011 in South Dakota, Utah and Colorado. Randy Halverson’s work attracted the attention of Bear McCreary, a composer who wrote the music for the TV show Battlestar Galactica, so he scored Halverson’s timelapse just for the hell of it. This is the result.

Sketches from descriptions of famous literary characters

Brian Joseph Davis has used law enforcement ‘photo-fit’ software to create composite sketches from descriptions of literary characters. ‘I started with my bookshelf, which seemed the obvious place’, Davis says. ‘Then I had to find writers who described their characters enough, which required either knowing books’ contents really, really well.’ Or scanning them and looking for keywords (‘eye’, ‘ear’, ‘hair’). The result is a mighty strange combination of literary criticism and forensics. If you can think of a well-described classic character he should consider doing next, email him. He is open to suggestions. Read more

The work of Jennybird Alcantara is a trip, to say the least. This stuff is about as surreal is surreal gets. Think dolls, and animals, and plants, and insects, then mix it all up every which way and you’ve got the beautifully twisted paintings of Jennybird Alcantara.

Films involving characters faced with an impossible choice never make easy viewing, an example being the Nick Cave Australian gem, The Proposition. A nightclub manager, played with understated power by Joaquin Phoenix, is the victim here, and you actually feel truly uncomfortable as his predicament unfolds. Set in the 1980s, We Own The Night shows a real nostalgia for that period — particularly in the costumes. Read more

If ever there was an opinion needed on the current Hip Hop scene, this is the one everyone should look to. More than likely, this homie is going to diss, if not one, then all of your favorite rappers and probably offend you. But I dare someone to say he is not speaking the truth. Plus, whose voice better to hear it in than that of Ghostface, Na’mean? I can read this blog for hours with a smile on my face.

New Mexico group, Alaska in Winter’s The Homeless And The Hummingbirds is a stunningly beautiful, slowburning song, featuring Beirut’s Zach Condon on trumpet.

Swedish designer Paula Hagerskans has a cool masculine-edge to her female fashion lines. But it’s her attention to detail that really blows my mind. Her perfectly tailored jackets, along with her flat dress shoes, make dressing up fun, comfortable and classy. When asked what she keeps in mind while designing, Hagerskans responds, ‘Bohemic music lovers, humor, graphic design and the female body’.
