by Do you know the feeling you get when you listen to a song for the first time and your heart swells immediately and all you can think is that you have just encountered something timelessly beautiful?
Well, I had that the other day with an oldie but goldie from the soul world: the ‘California soul’ world to be precise. Mike James Kirkland has a voice like velvet, and with his tune Hang On In There, he really got me. For those of you who are with me here, there’s a fantastic podcast interview with him where he reveals how things were ‘back in the old days’ that is well worth listening to.

I love this image by Rhea Garen because of the mix of reality and fantasy. The scene of a small cottage-like house in the woods immediately brings me back to some of my favorite childhood stories, like Hansel and Gretel or Sleeping Beauty. I feel like this could have been the woodcutter’s home, or the hide-out where Sleeping Beauty was taken by the three fairies, Flora, Fauna and Merriweather. There is a certain whimsy yet depth, candor yet mystery, all present in this one shot.
