Tom Lacey, ex-The Ghost of a Thousand, has one of those styles that defies definition. He can create super intricate pictures as well as simple and to the point ones, without losing the intensity and focus of the subject he’s serving.

Ed Phillips

I have the pleasure of calling Ed Phillips a good friend of mine. He’s going to hate me for showing off his work as he’s too modest to admit to it’s excellence. His style of candid-on-purpose is brilliant at capturing the moments he shoots and securing the essence of the shot. Every new picture he posts is another step forward for him. Read more

Juan Rayos

I stumbled upon Juan Rayos’s work, quite literally, and was blown away. His work takes you into the moments he has captured, whether it be video or still image. You feel like you were part of the action, like it was your experience too. He captures friendships, moments to be immortalized, and most of all, he captures the beauty in the simplicity of living free. Read more

White Wives: Indian Summer, Indian Summer

White Wives is a band from Pittsburgh. Taking their name from the Provo movement of the mid-1960s, their music is a breath of fresh air in the ever-stagnating punk scene. Intelligent lyrics and great musicianship allow this band to stand up on their own two feet and travel down whatever road they wish musically.

I love the deep sense of mystique and other-worldliness that resonates through Bill Carman’s artwork. Of his creative process, he says: ‘Things seem to crawl from my brain, through a sketchbook, and end up on some beautiful surface. I am an image maker who illustrates, draws, and paints’. Read more

Brilliant, pathetic, awesome, sad, funny, reality, insanity. There’s not much to say about this Tumblr, just look and be amazed.

I haven’t been this excited by a band in a long time. Florida’s Black Kids have crept under — and now over — the radar through a demo and some serious internet buzz from NME and Pitchfork. Not only are they ridiculously good, they’ve also offered their four-song demo — Wizard of Ahhh’s — for free on their MySpace page. Sweet.

Luxury goods have been getting a bad rap lately, and for good reason. Now I don’t know how you roll, but we don’t know many people who enjoy covering themselves head-to-toe in someone else’s initials. Yet for some reason designers think that diamante logos and monogrammed tapestries are the best mediums to communicate their brand. So it’s just as well LA based eyewear label Barton Perreira doesn’t play by the rules. Starting out less than a year ago, you won’t find their designs getting over-excited by insignia. Instead, these guys hand make their frames in Japan to rely on precision, fit and design. And that’s the way it should be.

We have a Contribute Section through which you can post onto LAEM under your name about your favourite pop culture discoveries. So help spread the good word about those talented peeps doing talented things. They win. You win. We win!

On this Virgin Mary HaloTech watch, the dial is a modern version of the nineteenth century art form of lithophanes, carved porcelain sheets that, when lit, deliver astoundingly detailed images. When the pusher is activated, the dial springs to life in 3D. The watch features a light-up dial, LED light, and afterglo effect. Read more
